What Are Keywords?

Keywords are the words and phrases people enter into the search bar of search engines when they are looking for something.

So let’s say, you want to find the most budget hotels to stay in New York, you will enter “cheap hotels in new york city” in a search engine like Google. So this search query that you enter in a search engine is called a keyword.

How To Search For A Keyword: 5 Principles

How To Search For Keywords For A Website To Get Higher Rankings In Search Engines

I am going to explain you the entire process of keyword research in the most simple, yet effective way but only if you promise to implement what I teach you.

There are 5 principles that I follow while doing a keyword search. These are the same 5 principles you need to follow while doing keyword research for your website.

1. Low Competition: QSR (Quoted     Search Results)

Keyword competition is the first metric I look for when doing keyword search. If the keyword has too much competition, I just leave it. The reason for this is that a high competition keyword will not rank me higher in the search engines and I won’t be getting any traffic.

So I always look for low competition keywords to get higher rankings. The metric I look for here is QSR – Quoted Search Results.

There is only one tool that (out of the many that I have used) that offers this piece of information in the most efficient way, and that is Jaaxy. And this is the tool I use for my keyword research.

Jaaxy gathers information from the search engines and shows you the exact number of competing pages for a particular keyword under QSR. This is your real competition!

A QSR of under 300 (i.e 300 competing pages in Google) is what you should be aiming for to get higher rankings. The closer to ZERO the better.

You can see in the above image that I have chosen the main keyword of this post “How To Search For Keywords For A Website” which has a QSR of 0. I have highlighted this with a red circle.

This means there are 0 competing pages ranked in Google for this keyword. So there’s no competition for this keyword and this post has the highest chances to get ranked on the first page in the search engines.

2. Traffic: Monthly Searches

The second metric is the amount of traffic or the average number of searches the keyword receives per month. In the above image, you can see this under the column saying Avg?

It makes no sense in trying to get rankings under a high traffic, but high competition(QSR) keyword. It won’t get ranked anyways. So who cares how much traffic it gets. So I go for certainty here. I go for a keyword if it gets over 50 searches a month.

It might seem low, but I recommend that if you are going for natural rankings (& not paid rankings) than any traffic is a good amount of traffic for you as long as it’s low competition.

Be it less than 10, 20, or 30 searches as these low volume keywords add up to get you higher rankings. Such low competition keywords with modest traffic are more relevant, convert better and grow your website pages cumulatively.

You can see in the image above that the traffic for the main keyword of this post “How To Search For Keywords For A Website” is 2831 searches monthly and it has a QSR of 0. Now that’s a great combination!

So it’s a keyword having high traffic volume (2831) and no competition (0 QSR) which makes it the best choice for the title of this post. I have highlighted this with a black circle.

3. Quality Keyword: KQI (Keyword Quality Indicator)

This is shown under the column saying KQI. The keyword quality is shown three colors:

Green = Great

Yellow = OK

Red = Poor

The keywords in green fulfill the above two criteria of Low Competition and Traffic Volume. I always go for the keywords with high quality shown in the color green and you should too.

Once you determine the quality of the keyword you can carry out the research efficiently.

I have highlighted this with a green circle in the above image.

4. SEO Score

SEO means Search Engine Optimization. An SEO Score is based on all the above factors like Competition, Traffic Volume and Keyword Quality. The higher the SEO score, the more likely you will get ranked on the first page of search engines.

So make sure you choose a keyword with the highest possible SEO score combining all the above mentioned criterion.

I have highlighted this with an orange circle in the above image.

5. Makes Sense: Be Grammatically Correct

It’s very important that your keyword makes sense grammatically. Using a grammatically incorrect keyword will change the meaning and context of your post topic.

Grammatical errors are the last thing search engines want while ranking the pages of your website and it might even drive wrong traffic that’s not relevant to your page.

For eg., if you run a sports goods shop and want to rank under “new sports clubs”. Here if you are not careful, you might end up getting traffic interested in finding a new club to dance on a Saturday night!

Not what you want, do you?

You can even look at the title of this post that you are reading. My title has a clear meaning, makes sense grammatically without confusing my target audience and my main keyword “How To Search For Keywords For A Website” fits naturally within the title.

The keywords you choose must make sense to the readers because we write content for our audience, not search engines!

So, To Sum It Up…

You can see in the above image that I started searching for the main keyword of this post by entering the search term “how to search keywords”. You can see the search results for this keyword in the first row.

But then I chose the keyword “how to search for keywords for a website” as a title of this post. Why?

The reason is simple. Even though both keywords meet my 5 basic principles, this keyword has a decent traffic volume of 2831 with no competition (0 QSR), compared to the previous keyword, which has a massive 6703 traffic volume but has 87 QSR (competing websites). Also, this keyword “how to search for keywords for a website” gives a bit more information about searching keywords in regards to a website to my target audience.

Simple, isn’t it?

    Truly a blessing to find this article! You have helped me tremendously! I knew about key words and jaxy, but i did not know how important the QSR was. This explains why i was never appearing not even in the first 20 pages. You are a life saver thank you from the bottom of my heart!

    1. Nick

      Hi Denton,

      It’s good that you now know how important the QSR is while researching keywords.

      Even if the traffic volume is high but the QSR is above 300(or even  above100 in some cases) it’s better to go for a keyword with comparatively less traffic having a QSR of under 300(the closer to zero the better)

      Just follow the 5 principles and you will see your self ranking ion the search engines.

      I wish you great success ahead.
