Best Websites To Start A Blog

WordPress is the most powerful blogging platform and most serious bloggers choose WordPress as their blogging platform.

There are two variations of WordPress – and

1. is the best place to start your blog

This is the simplest option if you are a beginner. In the free platform, you get hundreds of themes to choose from and there are no set up costs. You don’t need to have any coding or website designing knowledge.

If you are into blogging as a hobby and don’t want to invest any money, then this is a good option for you.

They store your site’s content for free on their servers. But this means the functionality is much limited and it looks less professional unless you switch to one of their paid plans.

If you go for their free version, you won’t be the owner of your blog or website and it will come with a .wordpress domain. This means that you will hardly have any control over advertising income, you can’t sell your blog or website and WordPress can suspend your site at any time.

You will have to go for one of their paid plans in order to get full control over your website.

The plans they offer are :

  • Free – $0/month
  • Personal –  $5/month
  • Premium – $8/month
  • Business – $25/month

You have to pay for all the plans in lump sum at the beginning.  There are some limitations even on the Free, Personal and Premium plans. So please do a thorough check and comparison before selecting.

In my opinion, going for a self-hosted WordPress website is a much better option. You will buy your own domain and WordPress hosting from a hosting service provider and it will be more cost-effective.

I have mentioned several well-known web hosting companies ( Bluehost, Hostgator, etc. ) further on this list.

Self hosted wordpress, an ideal choice for all bloggers
Courtesy: is an open-sourced platform that is 100% free to use and is the “real WordPress”. It’s also known as self-hosted WordPress, as you need to purchase your own domain name and web hosting.

With you can customize your website design, add free or paid WordPress themes and plugins, can run your own ads, and use tools like Google Analytics for tracking and custom analytics of your website.

You can use self-hosted WordPress to create your own online store and sell physical and digital products, accept payments and deliver products directly from your website.

Every professional blogger, small business owner and big brands like Disney use

If you are serious about making money from your website, then you will want to purchase your own domain name (.com, .net,.org) and web hosting, once your website grows.

This will make you the whole and sole owner of your website and you will have full control over the money your website makes from different sources. Having your own domain name and web hosting is like buying and owning a house as compared to renting an apartment.

For eg. you are reading this article, a website founded and owned by me. It’s a self-hosted WordPress site powered by Wealthy Affiliate.

Web hosting normally costs you $3 to $10 and you have to pay separately for buying a domain as they are two different things.

3. Tumblr

Tumblr is free platform to begin blogging

Tumblr is very easy to use and social platform.

They offer unlimited storage, customization and around 1000 themes you can choose from. It’s ideal for bloggers who love reblogging posts.

4. Blogger

Blogger is a free blogging platform for beginner bloggers.

Blogger is owned by Google, so you have access to Google Analytics and Google Adsense. It’s ideal for bloggers who don’t want to invest any money but want to make some money through ads.

It’s great for beginner bloggers who want to learn the basics, as it’s free and easy to use.

You won’t be able to self-host and be the owner of your blog or website and it will come with a .blogspot domain.

5. Bluehost

Use Bluehost to start creating your first ever blog

Most blogging platforms listed above are quite popular and well-known in the market. The best way to find the right platform is to consider

  • Whether the platform is designed for beginners or experts?

  • How much does it cost?
  • How much customization your target audience will demand?

It is wise to start with a beginner friendly or easy to use option initially, as in most cases, it’s easy to upgrade to a better platform.

Oh, very nice post here. I own a blog with blogger where I share my fictious stories and I have a small number of fans who really enjoy my work so I’m glad that it made your list here. It is free and very user friendly although I have not monetised it yet until I have grown a good fan base. I would like to try some other ones though. Nice post you put together here.

  2. Tracy

Wow! Needless must I say that this article is top notch and you really wowed me with this list compiled here. Getting started with a business online requires a website and getting it at the right place would ensure one would have a sure path to getting the right  leap to becoming a success as a blogger. I have heard of quite a couple of the blogs here on this list and the one I like most is Bluehost because of the plan they offer and how well established they have been over the years. Though WordPress too is great but I prefer bluehost

    1. Nick

      Hey Tracy,

Thanks for sharing your liking for Bluehost as a blogging platform. Surely they offer a great shared hosting plan starting at $3.95/month and thrown in sme extra goodies like Free Domain, Free SSL Certificate, 24/7 Support and
      1-click WordPress install.

And yes, Bluehost is a self hosted WordPress host. So you will have your web hosting and domain from Bluehost while still being with the amazing WordPress ( platform. Its the same as me, where I am having my web hosting and domain from Wealthy Affiliate who is a self hosted wordpress host.

  3. Dane

Hello there, thanks for sharing this amazing post. I have been observing the affiliate market system for a while now and I notice a steady growth in it, and that’s why I have decided to go into being an affiliate marketer. So far I have been making my personal research and have come across so many sites that promises to help train you to be a good blogger. Welathy affiliate seem to be one site that pops ups all the time and I must admit I’m impressed with all inahve seen about it. Right now i have made the decision to register unto the side and get proper training . Nice being here.

    1. Nick

Its good to know that after lots of research you have finally taken the first step towards your affiliate marketing journey with Wealthy Affiliate

Good luck with your training and I wish you a great future ahead.

  4. Nuttanee

I have personally use most of the web hosting that you recommended. From Hostgator, Bluehost, Wix and WordPress. By far I love WordPress the most because of it’s simplicity and easy to use. They even have the app for Iphone now so I can do some back office work when I do not have access to the laptop. Wix by far is great in terms of web hosting and also free site in my opinion.

However, I truly think that if you are new to building the site and want to learn how affiliate marketing work, you need some training so you will be in the game and WA is a great place to start.

    1. Nick

      Hey Nuttanee.

So here we meet again. I hope you are doing great.

Thanks for sharing your experience of using different web hosts. It’s good to know that the ever amazing WordPress has now got an iPhone app as well. The platform gets getting better and better, isn’t it?

  6. Rodarrick

In all honesty, this is awesome to read about and I really like everything written about here. Getting started with a website is the best way to go about starting a business online and the beat way to do that is through wealth affiliate. We both choose the same thing. The reason is because of the trainings and guide they provide alongside the process of setting up the website and they also help with running the website. There is nothing tha beast support and they throve at this too.

    1. Nick

      Hi Rodarrick,

Websites have been there for a long time and its inevitable to start a blog without using one. All the websites that have listed above are great platforms to start a blog.

But where Wealthy Affiliate stands apart is the state of the art training they provide, which has been designed keeping beginners in mind, as they are taught to build profit earning online businesses from scratch

  7. MariaSHC

For Blogger and even Tumblr, you can use your own domain. You don’t have to “assign” your custom domain to Blogger but you can “point” your domain name to your blogger site, for example. There are many options here and it’s good that you mention what each one is good or not good for. One of the hardest decisions new bloggers face is deciding where they will start, what platform. I know that levels of support can differ depending on what hosting plan you choose. What are the support levels for these platforms? Should I assume that the more expensive options have higher (and faster) levels of support?

    1. Nick

      Hi Maria.

Thanks for your comment. Support levels differ from platform to platform in terms of email support, phone support, support ticket, live chat and the time taken to solve your query. Most platforms I have experienced provide the suport ticket method where you will have to raise a support query.

There are low priced options like Bluehost, Hostgator, Siteground and more that provide great timely support 24/7. So it can’t be assumed that you can get higher and faster levels of support only with an expensive web host.

On the other hand, we have the option of Liquid Web which is comparatively expensive. But then you get super fast support from them ( & top-notch web hosting) as you get guaranteed response in 59 seconds (i.e less than a minute) for phone and chat requests.

Unlike some other web hosts, with Liquid Web you have call, live chat & email support. You’ll be immediately connected with a knowledgeable technician for efficiently solving your query. So yes you get what you pay for with Liquid Web!

  8. Dane

A really nice post you have given here. Going through this post have given me so much understanding about most of these sites, as all i have gotten about them so far isn’t what I’ll want to rely on. I have tried some other sites and I haven’t gotten a real training which I can call credible. But from the list here, I’ll go with Wealthy affiliate to train me because I know you wouldn’t call it your personal favorite if its not credible enough. Best regards.

    1. Nick

I must say you have made a great choice Dane.

Wish you all the best with Wealthy Affiliate. Just follow the training religiously and you will taste success sooner than you think with this amazing platform.

Join as a Free Starter Member ( No Credit Card details needed). You will get the first 10 lessons and 2 free websites. In this way, you will get to play around with the platform to build your own blogs and learn a lot absolutely free!

Wish you a great success ahead

Apparently these all companies you have discussed would be great to create the best websites to start a blog. I have had the experience of hosting my websites on Hostgator which had given me good services and I was totally satisfied with.

But since then I came across Wealthy Affiliate I found out Wealthy Affiliate would be absolutely a much better platform for build up my you mentioned, aside from offering great hosting, SSL, Email.etc; You are able to build and run your own business by getting advanced knowledge regarding content marketing and learn how to get ranked for your post in Google or any other Search Engine.

    Thank you for comprehensive post

Hi Nick, This is a very informative and helpful post, you have given my a few ideas, personally I use wordpress, I find it an easy to use all round good platform, I must admit that I hadn’t heard of some of your other recommendations until I read your post here, maybe it would have been better if I had come across your website before I set up my own website, it would have given me more options, however, this is a very helpful post for people that are just starting out with building a website, thank you for sharing.

Thank you for sharing your research on blog hosting; this has been super helpful to me!

I am really impressed with GreenGeeks infrastructure is powered by 300% renewable energy. I am always looking for ways to be environmentally conscious so this may have been a great choice for me had I known about them. I currently host my website with Wealthy Affiliate and I have been extremely happy with their service, training, and support.

This may sound like a silly question but I keep seeing the term ‘shared hosting’ and I am not completely clear on what that exactly means. Can you shed more light on what shared hosting is and why it might be beneficial for beginner bloggers? Thank you for your input and expertise!

    1. Nick

      Hi Shan,

I am happy to know that my post has been of great help to you.

And yes, with GreenGeeks we have a web hosting platform operating on 100% clean, renewable energy. We never knew that web hosting involved CO2 emissions, did we?

In regards to your question on Shared hosting, its a type of web hosting in which your website is hosted on a server that is shared by other websites. Hence the name shared hosting. As the overall cost is shared, the price you pay for shared hosting is much lower compared to other types of hosting

You will pay a little price every month for sharing a super server with hundreds or even thousands of other websites. Owing to its simplicity, lower costs and helpful tools it offers, its an ideal choice for beginners.

      Hope this answers your question.

Very detailed and comprehensive article about the best places to start a blog to make money or whatever your goals are. I have tried most of these during my “career” and finally found my way to the platform that offers sitespeed, anti-malware, affordable prices and lots of training. I could try to make a couple of new blogs by some of these sites or platforms you mentioned in the article, thanks for sharing this valuable information!
